Guarana is the seed of a climber plant from Brazil and it has been used for centuries as an energizing substance. It is available in powder and it contains high percentages of caffeine (between 4 and 5%), theobromine, guaranine and theophylline. In Brazil it is often used in soft drinks – sometimes as a substitute for regular caffeine. In Europe it forms the basis of many energy powders, pills and capsules. Guarana gives energy and increases concentration. It also represses hunger, which makes it suitable as a supplement for people who want to lose weight. Guarana is often used by students, by people who have to work nightshifts and by athletes. It can also be used recreationally: Guarana helps you to stay up late so that you can dance into the night.
